In coordination with the government’s promotion of its intelligent machinery policy, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs is helping the high-end bicycle industry in Taiwan to employ smart manufacturing technologies in hopes of upgrading the industry. One example of the upgrading is Fritz Jou Mfg. Co., Ltd., which has built an industry-leading smart-coating production line, acquiring orders from large international companies.

Fritz Jou, known for producing high-end bicycles, received funding from the Taiwan Industry Innovation Platform Program (TIIP) launched by the Industrial Development Bureau with the aid of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Industrial Upgrading and Transformation Service Team-Traditional Industry Team. It has since used the funds to build a flexible, smart production line that can satisfy low-volume, high-variety manufacturing. The production line incorporates RFID, a manufacturing execution and monitoring system, and automatic coating equipment, which together improve the consistency, timeliness, and quality of coating and assembly, allowing Fritz Jou to satisfy the customization needs of its high-end clients.

The company has now transferred into the smart production phase, and has accomplished the mixed-model production of bike frames of different models, sizes, and parameters. Compared with previous manufacturing processes, the new model has allowed Fritz Jou to decrease costs from defects and reworking by 20%, increase its average coating coverage rate for bike frames by 67%, decrease waste paint by 45%, raise its average price-per-product from US$700 to US$1,000, and decrease its minimum production run from 200 units to 1. With support for quick die changes and low-volume, high-variety production, its new model has led to major improvements in production efficiency, environmental protection, and added value.

Wherever its future production is based, whether in Taiwan, China, or Europe, Fritz Jou foresees replicating its successful experience overseas and ensuring its commitment to quality and consistency in every bicycle that comes off its production line.
