The 2018 Young Pin Design Awards ceremony was held today (May 27) at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1. Economic Affairs Minister Shen Jong-chin, Education Political Deputy Minister Leehter Yao, Industrial Development Bureau Director General Leu Jang-hwa, Taiwan Design Center Chairman Chang Chi-yi and Good Design Association Director Yu Chun-ming attended the event and presented the awards. A total of 35 “Young Pin Design Awards,” 84 “Young Pin Sponsor Awards” and three “Young Pin Entrepreneurial Potential Awards” were conferred. Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of seven winners to the “Best Design Award of the Year,” which were handed out by the head juror from each of the seven award categories. Winners received NT$100,000 in prize money and a certificate, as well as a direct qualification to the preliminary round of the Ministry of Education’s “Scholarship Program for Overseas Study in Arts & Design,” a program that encourages students to study abroad.
The Young Pin Design Award was jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education, organized by the MOEA’s Industrial Development Bureau and carried out by the Taiwan Design Center and Good Design Association. This annual event is an important platform for young designers from universities and junior colleges to compete together. This year, 4,834 works from 137 departments of 64 schools were submitted for contention, and 849 works qualified for the final round, resulting in 129 works being selected as award winners. The competition was extremely fierce!
This year, the Young Pin Design Award collaborated with the MOE’s “Scholarship Program for Overseas Study in Arts & Design” for the first time. Winners of the “Best Design Award of the Year” directly qualified for the preliminary round of the scholarship application process. Scholarship recipients will be given a subsidy of at least NT$1.5 million each to study abroad for one year. Moreover, the Young Pin Design Award will have a “Young Pin Design Award 2018 Exhibition” at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park’s Taiwan Design Museum from June 1 to September 16. The displayed works will be selected by the multidisciplinary expert juries out of the Young Pin Design Award finalists. It is hoped the curated exhibition and work selection will fully demonstrate the attitude and ideas of the new generation of design.
