Innovative composite materials applied to the electric bicycle industry chain Creating lightweight key products

The Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned the Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC) to handle the Innovative Application and Promotion Project for the Plastic Rubber and Composite Materials Industry. Through the project, we have developed a long-fiber composite material processing and molding technology to lock up the development of terminal components for the electric bicycle industry chain (such as seatposts, connecting rods, transmission gears, rims, etc.) to create high-value and light-weight key products. These high-priced electric bicycle parts account for about 20~25% (about NT$2.7 billion). In the future, about 566,000 pieces of thermoplastic composite parts can be recycled every year, which will drive the industry to move towards green recycling.

In 2018, the output value of electric bicycles was about NT$10.9 billion with an annual growth rate of 50.2%. The average price exceeded NT$40,000 in the past three years. This shows that the industry has high value and a high unit price advantage. Because of the prevalence of sports and leisure, and the needs of the elderly populations in Europe and the United States, it has expanded the market for industrial economic demand.

The problems caused by the materials of electric bicycle components, such as production energy consumption, long processing procedures, and fatigue after long-term use, etc., can be improved with the use of thermoplastic continuous fiber reinforced composite materials. Long-fiber thermoplastic composite particles with embedded injection technology can accelerate component manufacturing, reduce overall product weight, and help promote environmental awareness of waste material pollution.

To seize the market economy and enhance the competitiveness of the domestic electric bicycle industry, we have developed high-value product R&D alliances to produce lightweight key products for electric bicycles.

This method demonstrates the ability of industrial recycling technology research and development, and constructs a cyclical development model of domestic traditional manufacturing.
