With the outbreak of COVID-19, the number of patients has spiked globally, and there are not enough hospital beds. To solve this problem, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Health and Welfare join forces to form an interdisciplinary team with Taiwan Design Research Institute, Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital, and Miniwiz, to build MAC Ward (Modular, Adaptable, Convertible) through innovative design thinking. Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital will carry out technical cooperation with Temple University and host the 'US-Taiwan Alliance-MAC Ward Innovative Design Press Conference' at 4 PM today (5/15), inviting reporters and guests to jointly witness the innovative achievements of smart pandemic prevention.
'MAC Ward Innovative Design' is yet another achievement Taiwan is proud of, and it is the fruit of public-private cooperation facilitated by Taiwan Design Research Institute since its inauguration on February 4, 2020. Focusing on user needs, medical application, modular design, and production method, the 'MAC Ward Innovative Design' integrates assistive devices, electronic monitoring, and smart bathroom, to build a co-creative platform of interdisciplinary cooperation. Using recyclable and reusable materials, the design transforms general ward into isolation, negative pressure, and intensive care ward within 48 hours. It is the best solution of pandemic prevention as it can be easily assembled and disassembled, and can be set up anywhere.
Taiwan has a deep pool of design talents, complete supply chain, and comprehensive medical care system. This cooperation is just a beginning. In the future, we look forward to drive innovative development of Taiwanese medical industry, while also attracting more global attention to Taiwan's strengths of disease prevention and design.
