The problem of urban traffic jams is a pressing issue that almost every major city now faces, while the difficulty of locating a parking space in the city is only exacerbating traffic congestion. With the rise of Taiwan's Internet of Things (IOT) industry, Upark Co., Ltd., assisted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, aims to solve this acute problem — it has created the first IoT-based smart parking system, UPARK, which helps drivers pinpoint at the earliest possible time an available parking space nearby as well as providing a parking reservation service. Therefore, people will no longer need to worry about where to find a parking space during office hours.

According to research statistics, people in Taipei spend an average of 15 minutes searching for parking spaces during office hours. With a population of eight million in Greater Taipei, such ensuing problems as traffic congestion and tickets for illegal parking have amounted to a total economic loss of up to $10 billion each year. Therefore, Upark Co.,Ltd. has devised its UPARK smart parking system to solve these difficulties. It utilizes a specialized advanced technology with IoT connections that allows parking space owners to videotape when their spaces are illegally occupied, to provide evidence. Moreover, through this new business model of the sharing economy, the idle parking spaces -- available after business hours in the business district or in the community during business hours -- can be rented short-term to those with a need for parking spaces.

The traditional electric parking lock is a stand-alone device triggered by infrared ray or Bluetooth. Parking space owners, when they’re not on the spot, have no way of acquiring the updated status of their spaces, which is especially rattling when parking violations, equipment damage, and power outages frequently occur. Upark Co.,Ltd. is the first and only operator to integrate the smart IOT system into the management of parking lots. Through direct-managed parking lots, Upark ensures a great customer experience and service.

With limited resources in the early days of its business, Upark Co.,Ltd. was assisted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and has successfully obtained from the Industrial Development Bureau grants for its research and development projects. In October of 2017, it was awarded the 2017 Innovative Products Award. Currently, Upark has been cooperating with multiple public housing and other communities, providing the community management centers with UPARK smart parking system to remotely control their parking spaces. Upark is expected to promote the system to major cities such as Taichung and Kaohsiung in 2018, in the hope that more people can experience the convenience of a smart parking reservation system.

At present, Upark has provided in the Greater Taipei area with more than 150 parking spaces, and the number is expected to grow to over 1,000 by 2018. In the future, the Ministry of Economic Affairs will vigorously assist and support small- and medium-sized start-ups in Taiwan, furnishing start-ups with greatest resources to enable sustainable growth, continuous development, and market expansion.
