The Golden Pin Design Award 2017 Grand Ceremony was held on December 7 at the spectacular Eslite Spectrum Performance Hall, inside Taipei’s historic Songshan Cultural & Creative Park. It announced a total of 23 Golden Pin Design Award 2017 Best Design winners, and 3 Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2017 Best Design winners. The winners come from Taiwan, China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Germany. Taiwanese designers stole the show, winning 19 of the awards.

For a second year, the key visual of the ceremony was designed by Taiwan’s pioneering motion design studio, Bito. The theme of the ceremony was “Hui” (Convergence), representing Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award as a meeting point for designers from around the world. The ceremony host was Mickey Huang, who also hosted the Golden Horse, Golden Melody, and Golden Bell; entertaining the audience with his humor and personality. The interval performance was a live laser projection, electronic music, video DJ show by Taiwanese motion visual art group, Tripper.

The Jury Chair for Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2017 was Kazuo Tanaka, CEO of GK Design, Japan. The Final Selection Jury for the two awards included Walter Wang, Apex Pang-Soong Lin, Cheng-Neng Kuan, Rossana Hu, Effie Huang, Andrew Wong, Quake Hsu, Shikuan Chen, Gan Ke Ping, Wei-Hsiung Chan, Jacqueline Lai, Shu Chang Kung, Martin Darbyshire, and Kristof Crolla.

This year, the Golden Pin Design Award received 2,919 entrants, which were whittled down to 72 Finalists, then 23 Best Design winners. The Golden Pin Concept Design Award received a record-breaking 4,395 entrants, which was reduced to just 6 Finalists, and finally 3 Best Design winners. The jury was overcome with the high standard of entrants. Many designs for mundane, everyday objects were presented in a new way, signaling a paradigm shift. In recent years, many designers have begun focusing on social issues. This trend was reflected in many of the Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2017 winning design concepts, which aimed to improve the lives of underprivileged communities.

The Golden Pin Design Award is in its 37th year; a government sponsored initiative, working with the public. Year-on-year, it attracts some of the most interesting designers from all over the world. Taiwanese designers are competing with the world’s most exciting talents. The number of companies entering the Golden Pin Design Award rose by 198 from the previous year, a 20% increase. The total number of entries to the Golden Pin Concept Design Award rose by 1,015 from the previous year, a 30% increase. These statistics prove that many companies and designers, all over the world, are focused on winning the Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award. We hope our promotion of the Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award can bring design aesthetics into the Taiwanese imaginary, influence Taiwanese industry, and turn Taiwan into an internationally regarded design island.
